Baby and toddler photography is so challenging and so rewarding. Miracles inside of every dimple, dribbling chin, and toothless grin.
For a baby’s first year, to have good photography is so important. They change from week to week and month to month. That momentum doesn’t change when they become a toddler. Toddler photography is about capturing the individual as it emerges. The independent self is about and on the move.
For every one of my sessions with a baby or toddler, the photography has to be done with patience. They need to feel safe and secure. The best approach is to allow them to explore. Baby and toddler photography is so much more genuine when it’s unposed. The way we observe them is the way we want to remember these moments. Their fascination with a rock or leaf can be perturbing when you just need to get the shopping done, yet these moments will pass and the fascination with the minute details will fade. The trill of chasing pigeons may not fade as they grow, but the social acceptability does.
I believe in capturing a baby or a toddler in photography as they explore and play. Coming from a large family, and mother to children of my own, I am very familiar with children. There is little a baby or toddler can do which will shock or surprise me. As long as they are not in danger, I believe in allowing them to run free.
